Dynamic and versatile character: second edition of the Audi Q5 Sportback
With the Q5 Sportback, Audi expands the Q5 model range with a sporty variant with a coupé look. With its progressive and dynamic silhouette, this new version of the model appeals to customers who highly value dynamic design, but at the same time still do not want to lose the practical advantages of an SUV.
The Audi Q5 Sportback complements the typical SUV characteristics of flexibility and space with an even more dynamic silhouette. The unmistakably recognizable design with the characteristic sloping rear and elegant lines provide a sporty appearance. The second generation of the Q5 Sportback offers up to 515 liters of luggage space, with the SQ5 Sportback it equals 470 liters. With the seat folded down, the load compartment of the Q5 Sportback increases to 1,415 liters and to 1,388 liters for the SQ5 Sportback. The Q5 Sportback has a towing capacity of up to 2,400 kilograms.
Sporty design thanks to the sloping roofline
Compared to its predecessor, the design of the new Audi Q5 Sportback is much tighter. The wide Singleframe front grille sits high and is flanked by vertical, functional air curtains. Highly refined and sculpturally shaped headlights create an aggressive look. In the area below the Singleframe front grill, there is a large air intake plus numerous sensors. Above the sills, a rising dynamic line leads over the fenders to the rear bumper, giving the car a dynamic appearance even when stationary. The horizontal shoulder line, as a connecting element between the front and rear lights, rises slightly above the rear lights on the Sportback to visually match the roof arch with the sloping rear window. The rear of the Q5 Sportback has been visually pulled back to the maximum to achieve a roofline that slopes back from the B-pillar. The classic SUV proportions have become even more dynamic in the elegant Sportback form. With optional roof rails, dynamic roof lines are extended to add useful value. The elegant rear window graphics also help to visually lengthen the cabin.
The back is extremely clearly designed with a minimum of lines. From the rear window to the lower edge of the sculptural light bar, there is a smooth surface that is bordered by a sharp edge across the entire width of the car. A wide, visually calm area runs below. A sporty, distinctive trunk lid edge completes the progressive design. The diffuser is integrated as a kind of island in the rear bumper. The tailpipes sit below it, while the S model has the iconic twin round tailpipes in a new, sportier design.
Exterior advanced is part of the standard equipment of the Q5 Sportback
The Q5 Sportback is available in Advanced and S line trim levels. In addition, the SQ5 Sportback has its own unique exterior. The exterior advanced offers dynamic design elements with stylish accents compared to the basic equipment. The radiator grille and air intake inserts at the front are finished in Scandium Grey, while the lower line is finished in a contrasting Tambora Gray lacquer finish. The diffuser has a matte black grain finish and the rear inserts are finished in selenite silver. There are also 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels.
On the S line exterior version and on the S model, the front air vents are larger and the rear diffuser is much sportier. In addition, the Singleframe grille is surrounded by a frame with matt anthracite chrome optics (for the S line exterior) and matt silver chrome optics (for the S model), and the large L-wing-shaped side aerodynamic elements emphasize the sporty design. In the S model, the Singleframe grille looks even more modulated thanks to vertically inserted L-shaped ornaments in matte silver chrome. The door sill trims in matt anthracite chrome optics for the S line exterior and in matt silver chrome optics for the S model also contribute to the dynamic character. The decorative moldings of the windows have aluminum optics as standard. At the rear, the second-generation digital OLED taillights and the new projection light in the spoiler above the rear window provide an increased level of safety. This projection light projects a graphic onto the upper area of the rear window, thereby increasing the brake light area.
In harmony with the exterior: the design philosophy of the interior
The interior of the new Q5 Sportback is consistently tailored to the needs of passengers and follows Audi's new design philosophy. The properties of the materials are incorporated into the interior design at a very early stage of the development process and in combination with the Audi MMI panoramic display and the MMI passenger display provide a visually clearly designed digital scene.
The high-contrast structure of the interior deliberately places elements in the foreground or background, creating a three-dimensional spatial architecture that is designed and ergonomically tailored to the occupants. The atmosphere in the interior is designed to create a sense of home comfort. The so-called soft shell extends from the doors through the entire cockpit to the center console and thus creates a homogeneous and enveloping sense of space. The interior is not only specifically user-oriented, but also sustainably designed. Materials such as the Kaskade upholstery or the Dinamica microfiber material consist primarily of recycled polyester. Audi also relies on future-oriented and efficient use of resources in the Q5 Sportback.
High-tech engines with internal combustion and MHEV plus technology
The new Audi Q5 Sportback is based on Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), a platform architecture for conventionally driven models with longitudinally mounted internal combustion engines, and will be equipped with the highly efficient MHEV plus technology from the start of sales. The new MHEV plus technology with a 48-volt electrical system supports the internal combustion engine, reducing CO2 emissions and at the same time increasing power and driving comfort. Pure electric maneuvering and parking are also possible to a limited extent.
The new traction generator (TSG) generates an additional torque of up to 230 newton meters and up to 18 kW (24 hp) of power. The 48-volt system also allows the use of an electric air conditioning compressor. This offers the great advantage that even when the engine is switched off – for example when coasting or at a red light – the air conditioner continues to operate at full power and maintains a comfortable temperature in the interior.
The lithium-ion battery in models with MHEV plus technology is based on lithium-iron phosphate technology and has a capacity of 1.7 kWh. The belt starter-generator (RSG) takes over the main tasks of starting the engine and supplying electrical power to the battery. TSG enables electric driving, relieves the load on the internal combustion engine and helps reduce consumption. When decelerating, the TSG returns energy back to the battery with up to 25 kW of power (recovery). Premium Platform Combustion enables gradual electrification in the form of mild hybrids. Plug-in hybrids with large batteries and external charging options will also follow later in the life cycle of the new Audi Q5 Sportback.
The Audi Q5 Sportback launches in Europe with three engines, with other powertrain options to come. At launch, all variants are equipped with MHEV plus technology, which can briefly provide up to 18 kW (24 hp) of additional power. All models also use a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. The base engine is a 2.0 TFSI with 150 kW (204 hp), 340 Nm of peak torque and is equipped with front-wheel drive. Quattro four-wheel drive is available as an option. The 2.0 TDI variant of the Audi Q5 Sportback is available with the EA288 evo engine generation. This unit generates 150 kW (204 hp) and 400 Nm of torque and is only available with quattro drive. Audi offers the Audi SQ5 Sportback as the range-topping model at launch. The V6 TFSI engine with a displacement of three liters has an output of 270 kW (367 hp) and a maximum torque of 550 newton meters.
