Hyundai turns the windshield into a huge display

Will the small displays all over the cockpit go to history and all the readings go directly to the windshield? Soon this may become a reality for Hyundai models magazin de piese.

Hyundai turns the windshield into a huge display

As practical as the displays in cars are, they all have one major drawback: if you want to switch between the countless types of readings, you always have to take your eyes off what's happening on the road. Head-up displays have at least made navigation directions safer, as the driver is not looking away from where they should be looking all the time.

However, South Korean automotive supplier Hyundai Mobis wants to take this technology a step further in collaboration with the German company Zeiss. Thanks to the so-called Holographic Windshield Displays (Holographic HUD) In the future, cars may end up without a single screen in the passenger compartment. Their functions will be "seized" from the windshield, which will function almost like a cinema screen, displaying everything from navigation to video communications to movies and games for the passenger to the driver. To be more precise, a transparent "screen" will be installed in front of the windshield, on which images for all functions are projected. This layer would remain imperceptible to people in the car and be only 0.1 mm thick.

The technology will use the lower edge of the windshield, more or less at the same height as the familiar head-up displays. However, the Holographic HUD should span the entire width of the glass.

New opportunities for designers

In addition to safety, this technology also opens up new possibilities for interior design. Some manufacturers – for example Tesla or Hyundai (for the Ioniq 5 or 6) – strive for the most tidy and clean cockpit that can be designed without additional displays.

Mass production – planned for 2027.

It is not clear in which model this innovation will debut. Hyundai Mobis is a supplier to both Hyundai and Kia, so either brand is a possible option. For now, it is only known that there is already a prototype of the innovation and that its implementation in mass production should begin in 2027 Bujie Denso.
