The new Audi A5: a masterpiece of understated elegance (VIDEO)
More than 30 years after Audi introduced the A4 B5, that A4 has become the A5. The reason for this is relatively simple. But understanding the logic is not so simple. Because Audi explains to us that all even numbers in the future will be reserved for electric models, while odd numbers will be assigned to LPG models. In other words, the A4 will be electric in the future, while the A5 is actually the old A4. And if you are now asking yourself the question, what is happening with the previous A5? The coupe, convertible, and Sportback, alas, have been crossed off the list, more or less being replaced by these two cars. Audi explains in this connection that the Audi A4 will be positioned a little higher. But to recap – after all, the A4 is now called the A5 and will be offered as a sedan Supapa EGR Pierburg.
We start classically from the front of the new A5. What immediately makes an impression, the entire front is pulled one idea down. It has a rather sporty look. The Single Frame grid is, of course, retained. This is completely logical, but now it is much wider and at the same time narrower in terms of implementation. The front lights are rather narrow in execution, in this particular case matrix LEDs, and the new A5 will offer three different types of headlights. At the base, it is now always entirely with LED technology. The middle variant looks the same as the one here in terms of shape and light graphics, though it doesn't have matrix LEDs. To make it clearer - above are the daytime running lights, and below we have short and long, everything is included, but only the top version has matrix LEDs. Also on the outside we have air curtains which are also functional.
The new Audi A5 is actually the first model built on the PPC platform. PPE - Premium Platform Electric - is already familiar to us, while here it is the first car stepping on the PRC platform. The abbreviation is Premium Platform Combustion, that is to say, it is a base for LPG models and longitudinally mounted units. The A5 is the first such car, but it certainly won't be the only one left.
The new A5 is positioned a little higher, and this also logically means that the car is growing in dimensions. Here this car is now 4.83 m long. That is to say, compared to the old A4, we have an additional length of 6.7 cm, and by the way, the sedan and Avant are absolutely identical in this respect. The wheelbase is extended, we have relatively short overhangs, I think it works out pretty well that way. 2.90 m is the wheelbase, this means that here we have a plus of about 8 cm. But the car has also grown in width - 1.86 m is the width - which is about 1.3 cm more. And the height – in this particular case, about 1.46 m, almost 1 cm more than we have with the Avant, and the limousine is 1.44 m high. The rear window goes down relatively smoothly, at least for a station wagon, in my opinion. The fourth D-pillar has a rather serious slope, and logically we have – they should never be missing – the so-called Quattro blisters, that is, bulging fenders, although here their design is quite different compared to the predecessor. They are no longer brought out with a sharp edge, but now the shape is more rounded and yet, I guess you can see it well in studio lighting, the rays fall directly and the fender sticks out quite noticeably. The door handles are also special because they are recessed into the doors and you have to reach for them
In the second B-pillar we now have the specific model or motorization of the car laser-engraved. Well, here it says Audi, and here it says A5 Avant TFSI Quattro - i.e. gasoline engine and all-wheel drive - I can already give you that, but we will talk about the motors a little later. Rims are probably an important topic as well. Here we have 20-inchers fitted to this A5, and no more is possible. In the basic version, they are 17-inch, and in the S-Line trim level, which is exactly what this car is, 19-inch are available as standard.
Naturally, we also have to talk about those taillights, probably the most serious design highlight of this new Audi A5. Here we have OLED stops, second generation OLED at that, to be exact. That's what Audi calls them. And the brand has been known for years for its innovative solutions related to lighting and their graphics.
Here we now have luggage volume from 476 liters to 1,424 liters, but in the predecessor, the A4 Avant, it was from 495 to 1,495 liters. So, OK, we're only talking about 20 liters here, in this configuration, but I find it a little disappointing to be honest. If we compare all this with, for example, the VW Passat, which is even longer, specifically 4.92 m, but it has 690 liters.
For the start of sales in November of this year, the new Audi A5 will be available with four engines, but strictly speaking, it is about three units. The entry-level version is the 2.0 TFSI. This is a 2-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, which will be available with two power outputs – a choice of 150 or 204 hp. The smaller one, or the one with 150 horses, is always tied to front-wheel drive, while the bigger one offers a choice between front-wheel drive and Quattro. The gearbox is 7-speed with double clutch S-Tronic is standard on all motorizations. The diesel is again a 2-liter TDI with 204 hp.
