The police MZ ETZ-250F came to Bulgaria 40 years ago
Although in the 1980s VEB Motorradwerk Zschopau (better known as MZ) was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Europe, this was not felt very actively on the Bulgarian market. During this period, the motorcycles of the famous East German brand sold in our country were delivered in limited quantities and only of the models with a 150-cc engine. About 40 years ago, however, a special MZ series arrived here, which immediately impressed motorcycle enthusiasts with both its characteristic appearance and its specific purpose. These were the MZ ETZ-250F motorcycles, equipped for road control, whose production in East Germany began in 1981.

The letter F added to the standard designation stands for Funk, that is, “radio”, which suggests that the model is equipped with a radio station. Unlike the original version, whose power was 15.5 kW, in this case it was reduced by three kW, since the bulky fairing could cause stability problems at high speeds. Therefore, the maximum speed of the ETZ 250F is limited to 100 km/h, while in the standard version it reaches 130 km/h. However, acceleration from 0 to 80 km/h takes only 7.8 seconds.
A U 600 radio system is installed, housed in a box behind the single seat together with the “BITTE FOLGEN” (“PLEASE FOLLOW”) indicator light, and the characteristically shaped antenna is placed on the side. The lighting and radio controls are mounted on the dashboard and allow the driver to operate them effortlessly while driving. The two side cases at the rear of the machine are used to transport additional equipment.
In addition to a protective shield and knee fairing, the radio-controlled ETZ 250F motorcycle is equipped with two blue flashing lights and a siren.
The engine is a two-stroke, single-cylinder with a power of 12.5 kW (17 hp) at 5000 rpm. The gearbox has five gears, which are engaged using a pedal. The nominal voltage of the battery is 12 volts, and its capacity is 9 Ah.
The front wheel is suspended on a telescopic fork with hydraulic shock absorber and has a disc brake. The rear wheel is on a balancer with hydraulic struts.
The dimensions are: length 2160 mm, height to the top of the glass 1600 mm, clearance 150 mm.
The average fuel consumption is 4.5-5 liters per 100 km. The tank holds 17 liters of fuel, which can be used to travel about 360 kilometers. The total weight of the motorcycle with all additional equipment is approximately 160 kilograms.
An interesting feature of the special MZ motorcycles delivered to our country is that they retain the color combination of green and white, characteristic of the vehicles of the GDR People's Police.
