Customers who swore allegiance to the Mercedes S-Class definitely had to marvel at the technical fireworks that BMW ignited with the 7 Series. The F01 generation featured for the first time dual-drive, integral active steering, where the rear wheels steer at an angle up to 2.5 degrees, as well as an infotainment system for the rear seats with integrated monitors in the backrests of the front seats. Also new was the iDrive system, which made it easier to operate the cockpit with push buttons around the controller. The wide range of engines includes 6-, 8- and 12-cylinder variants, but also two hybrids, with the later one (from the 2012 facelift) using an inline 6-cylinder petrol engine instead of the V8 unit, as is indeed economical, but is hardly found used anymore.
Weaknesses: Some of the innovations have caused problems in the meantime. The iDrive controller with a price of BGN 1,400 is among the affordable ones. Defective EGR valves or leaky radiators are typical of the popular 730d diesel variant. The integral steering partly makes noises, partly the rear wheels lock in the cornering position. Vulnerable to the in-line 6-cylinder gasoline engine (N54) is the turbo's wastegate. Be careful with V8 gasoline units (N63): here, in addition to gear chains, turbines and cylinder heads are also problematic.
