Liebherr's new internal combustion engine will run on ammonia

Is a revolution in the heavy construction machinery sector on the horizon? At Bauma 2025, Liebherr, a specialist in this field, is presenting a concept for an environmentally friendly internal combustion engine – one that will use neither gasoline nor diesel.

Instead of fossil fuels, the unit will rely on “green” ammonia as its energy source. The colorless and odorless gas, which is a compound of hydrogen and nitrogen, is relatively easy to store and transport, has a high energy density – and burns without emitting CO₂ if it comes from renewable sources.

Liebherr: two types of fuel, zero emissions?

The concept presented is based on a Dual-Fuel engine, which can use two types of fuel simultaneously. In practice, this means that ammonia provides the main amount of energy, while ignition is achieved either by diesel or by climate-neutral hydrogen, which is ideally extracted directly from ammonia with the help of a catalyst. The interesting thing about the new machine is that it does not emit CO₂ or fossil emissions – but remains a true internal combustion engine.

Liebherr wants to apply the technology where all-electric drives cannot cope: in mining, in the large machinery sector and in remote areas without a reliable power supply. According to the company, this is an important step towards sustainable energy supply for off-highway applications.

Ammonia engine to make world debut at Bauma 2025

The world premiere of the new concept engine will take place at the Bauma exhibition in Munich (April 7-13), the world's leading trade fair for construction and mining equipment. The engine model will be presented in the atrium of Liebherr's main stand.
